| biography:
| English courtier. He became a gentleman usher to Henry VIII, was entrusted with several diplomatic missions, and later held many court appointments, including those of Comptroller of the Household and Lord Privy Seal. Among the rich possessions which he amassed were the abbeys of Woburn and Tavistock, and the London properties of Covent Garden and Long Acre. Created earl in 1550, he led the mission to Spain in 1554 which escorted Philip home to marry Mary I. |
