| English statesman, born in Arlington, N Greater London, UK. He studied at Oxford, becoming secretary of state (1662–74) under Charles II and one of the king's Cabal ministry. In 1674 he was unsuccessfully impeached for popery and self-aggrandizement. He then served as Lord Chamberlain, negotiated the Triple Alliance against France (1668), and helped to develop the English party system. |
