| British Conservative statesman, born in Powderham, Devon, SW England, UK. He studied at Oxford, and became (as Baron Irwin 1925) Viceroy of India (1926–31). He was foreign secretary (1938–40) under Neville Chamberlain, whose ‘appeasement’ policy he implemented, and ambassador to the USA (1941–6). He was created earl in 1944. |
