| biography:
| British admiral, born in Southampton, Hampshire, S England, UK. He became Third Sea Lord (1908), and was commander-in-chief at the outbreak of World War 1. His main engagement was the Battle of Jutland (1916), for which he was much criticized at the time, although it is now accepted he rendered the German high seas fleet ineffective for the remainder of the war. Promoted to First Sea Lord, he organized the defences against German submarines, and was made Admiral of the Fleet (1919). He later became Governor-General of New Zealand (1920–4), and was created an earl in 1925. |
