| British field marshal, born in Edinburgh, EC Scotland, UK. He studied at Oxford and Sandhurst Military Academy, obtained a commission in the 7th Hussars, and served in Egypt, South Africa, and India. In 1914 he led the 1st Army Corps in France, and in 1915 became commander of the British Expeditionary Force. He waged a costly and exhausting war of attrition, for which he was much criticized, but led the final successful offensive (Aug 1918). In post-war years he devoted himself to the care of ex-servicemen, organizing the Royal British Legion. His earldom was awarded in 1919. |
