| Colonialist, born in Bath, SW England, UK, the nephew and adopted son of Jeffrey, 1st Baron Amherst. In 1816 he was sent as ambassador to China, but his mission failed when he refused to kow-tow to the emperor. In 1823 he was appointed Governor-General of India, where he weathered the first Burmese War and was rewarded with an earldom (1826). |
