| British statesman and prime minister (1754–6, 1757–62), the brother of Henry Pelham. He became Earl of Clare (1714) and Duke of Newcastle (1715). A Whig and a supporter of Walpole, he was appointed secretary of state in 1724, and held the office for 30 years. Extremely influential during the reigns of George I and II, in 1757 he was in coalition with Pitt during the Seven Years' War, but resigned after hostility from the new king, George III. |
