| biography:
| Scottish Royalist commander during the English Civil War. He fought during the Thirty Years' War, leading an army in support of Gustavus Adolphus (1631–2), and later played a conspicuous part in the contest between Charles I and the Covenanters. Created duke in 1643, he led a Scottish army into England (1643), but was defeated by Cromwell at Preston, and beheaded. |
