| biography:
| English statesman and court favourite, born in Brooksby, Leicestershire, C England, UK. He was knighted by James I, and raised to the peerage as Viscount Villiers (1616), Earl of Buckingham (1617), Marquess (1618), and Duke (1623). In 1623 he failed to negotiate the marriage of Prince Charles to the daughter of the Spanish king, but later arranged the marriage to Henrietta Maria of France. The abortive expedition against Cadiz (1625) exposed him to impeachment by the Commons, and only a dissolution rescued him. An expedition against France failed (1627), and while planning a second attack he was assassinated at Portsmouth by John Felton, a discontented subaltern. |
