| biography:
| General, born in Great Potheridge, Devon, SW England, UK. He fought in the Low Countries, and with the Royalists in Scotland, then joined the Commonwealth cause and served successfully in Ireland, Scotland, and in the first Dutch War (1652–4). He feared a return to Civil War during and after Richard Cromwell's regime (1658–9), and was instrumental (as commander of the army in Scotland) in bringing about the restoration of Charles II, for which he was created Duke of Albemarle. |
