| British field marshal, born in Colombo, W Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon). He studied at Addiscombe, and entered the Bengal Engineers in 1826. He served in the campaigns in India, distinguished himself at the siege of Lucknow (1857), then in the Chinese war (1860) and the expedition in Abyssinia (1868). In 1870 he became commander-in-chief in India and a member of the Indian Council, and was subsequently Governor of Gibraltar, field marshal, and Constable of the Tower. |
