| biography:
| Inventor, born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. Working in his father's worsted mill at Manningham, he invented a wool-comber in 1845, and made a fortune, at the same time bringing prosperity to Bradford and the wool trade of Australia and New Zealand. Later he spent a quarter of a million pounds developing a machine to spin waste silk, and was nearly bankrupt by the time its success made him a second fortune. A generous benefactor, he presented Bradford with Lister Park, and was created Baron Masham in 1891. |
