name: Joule, James (Prescott)

pronunciation: [jool]

lived: (1818–89)

biography: Physicist, born in Salford, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. He studied at Manchester University under John Dalton. In a series of experiments (1843–78) he showed that heat is a form of energy, and established the mechanical equivalent of heat. This formed the basis of the theory of the conservation of energy. He also worked with Lord Kelvin on temperature changes in gases, which led to the founding of the refrigeration industry. His name is preserved in the unit of work, the joule.
