| biography:
| British statesman and lawyer, born in Ashburton, Devon, SW England, UK. He studied for the bar, and became an MP in 1768. A critic of the administration of Lord North, he is best remembered for passing the 1780 resolution - in reality against North rather than George III - that ‘the influence of the crown has increased, is increasing, and ought to be diminished’. He entered the cabinet as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in Rockingham's administration (1782), and was created a baronet in the same year. |
