biography: British soldier, born in Sevenoaks, Kent, SE England, UK. Joining the army at the age of 14 he played an important part in the North American phase of the Seven Years' War (1756–63). He was in command of the expedition against the French in Canada, and captured Louisburg (1758). Appointed commander-in-chief of North America in 1759, he captured Montreal in 1760. He was Governor-General of British North America (1760–3), then commander-in-chief of the British army (1772–96).
