| British field marshal, born in Bristol, SW England, UK. Educated in Birmingham, he joined the army at the outbreak of World War 1, and served in Gallipoli and Mesopotamia. In World War 2, his greatest achievement was to lead his reorganized forces, the famous 14th ‘Forgotten Army’, to victory over the Japanese in Burma. He was Chief of the Imperial General Staff (1948–52), and a highly successful Governor-General of Australia (1953–60). Knighted in 1944, he became a viscount in 1960. |
